Background - Jan Atyeo

Jan Atyeo is from a family familiar with the applied arts, in particular a lineage of strong women who travelled, collected and painted well before the emergence of gender equality and opportunity.

She left Australia at a young age and ventured around Europe, visiting her second cousin Sam frequently before settling in England during the early 1970s. Here, amongst the artistic playground of inner London, Atyeo began her own explorations.

She studied jewellery and enamelling with the local experts and set up a studio in Camden Town. She was discovered early by Liberty of London and worked in house designing jewellery in collaboration with the leading fabric designers of the time. She also exhibited jewellery at Goldsmith’s Hall and is represented in collections in Australia and the United States.

The studio blossomed and evolved into the highly regarded Lock Shop centred within Camden Market on the Regent Canal.

Curating and exhibiting both young and established artists gave Atyeo the impetus not only for her own artistic ventures but a passion for promoting the talents of the undiscovered. She bought this ambition back to Australia four years later.

Upon resettling in Melbourne, Atyeo launched into fashion design and retail as a core business, but still exhibited jewellery at Distelfink and Georges in Collins St. She established Profile Gallery in the early 80s, focusing on exhibiting ceramics and printmaking, launching the careers of many now established artists.

In 1989 Atyeo established Crowded House Design, a stalwart of the arts, crafts and interior design for 17 years. This was a rare retail gallery that harnessed her talents and the skills of ceramicists, painters, printmakers, glass blowers and furniture makers into a proudly local emporium of design.

A new venture, Detail, continued her holistic approach to art and business, this time with a focus on fashion and accessories. She was responsible for much of the design, all made locally within her studio and combined with imported brands to create a distinctive commercial but crafted brand ethos.

Having moved on from Detail, Atyeo now focuses on her own work. Ideas formed over the years are emerging in her artistic endeavours.
